New Delhi, May 12: In a significant decision impacting millions of medical aspirants nationwide, the National Testing Agency (NTA) has cancelled the NEET-UG 2026 examination held on May 3 following allegations of a major paper leak. The move comes after growing concerns over the credibility and fairness of the country’s largest medical entrance examination.
The Central Government has also directed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to conduct a detailed probe into the suspected irregularities linked to the exam. Officials stated that the decision was necessary to protect the integrity of the examination system and maintain confidence among students and parents.
NEET-UG is the gateway for admission to undergraduate medical courses across India, and this year more than 22 lakh students reportedly appeared for the test. However, controversy erupted after alleged “guess papers” circulating on social media were found to contain several questions similar to those asked in the actual examination. Investigators are now looking into possible connections in Rajasthan and other states where the material was allegedly distributed before the exam.
The NTA has confirmed that the examination will be conducted again, though revised dates will be announced separately. Candidates have been advised to stay updated through official NTA platforms for information related to the fresh schedule, admit cards, and other examination instructions.
Meanwhile, central and state investigative agencies have intensified efforts to identify the individuals and networks involved in the alleged leak. Sources indicate that several suspects are being questioned, while investigators are also examining online communication channels and digital evidence linked to the circulation of the papers.
The cancellation has created uncertainty and stress among students preparing for medical admissions. However, many education experts and aspirants have supported the decision, saying that a re-examination is essential to ensure equal opportunity and transparency for deserving candidates.
Authorities have assured that strict legal action will be taken against anyone found responsible for malpractice or tampering with the examination process. The investigation is expected to continue over the coming weeks as agencies work to uncover the full extent of the alleged paper leak network.
