The national capital served as the epicenter of global diplomacy yesterday as India successfully hosted the 4th BRICS Summit. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was joined by the Presidents of Brazil, Russia, China, and South Africa at Vigyan Bhawan to finalize a strategic roadmap that signals a shift in the global balance of power. The most significant outcome of the summit was the formal agreement to explore a BRICS-led Development Bank. In what is being seen as a direct challenge to the World Bank and IMF, the proposed bank aims to mobilize resources for infrastructure projects in emerging and developing nations. Prime Minister Singh stated that such an institution would supplement existing multilateral efforts while providing a stronger voice to the "Global South."The summit culminated in the "Delhi Declaration," a bold document criticising the slow pace of reform in international financial institutions. The BRICS leaders demanded that the leadership of the IMF and World Bank be decided via a transparent, merit-based process rather than traditional Western appointments.
Geopolitical Stance
On the security front, the group sent a clear message to the West regarding tensions in the Middle East. The leaders cautioned against military intervention in Iran and called for a peaceful, diplomatic resolution to the Syrian crisis.
