New Delhi, May 20: India has taken another significant step toward transforming its railway infrastructure as the government prepares to develop a new indigenous bullet train capable of reaching speeds of 350 kilometres per hour. The ambitious project reflects the Centre’s long-term vision to establish a modern, high-speed transportation network across the country.
Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw recently confirmed that the design process for the advanced bullet train is expected to begin within the next six months. The proposed train will be developed under the government’s “Make in India” initiative and is aimed at strengthening domestic railway manufacturing and engineering capabilities.
Officials associated with the high-speed rail programme stated that the upcoming train will represent a major technological upgrade over India’s first indigenous semi-high-speed bullet train model, which is currently being designed for operations of up to 280 KMPH. The new 350 KMPH version is expected to significantly reduce travel time between major metropolitan cities while enhancing passenger safety, comfort, and operational efficiency.
India’s first bullet train corridor between Mumbai and Ahmedabad is already under rapid construction with technical cooperation from Japan. The 508-kilometre high-speed rail corridor is considered one of the country’s largest infrastructure projects and is expected to reduce travel time between the two cities to nearly two hours once operational.
Railway authorities have already completed several important phases of the project, including elevated track construction, bridge work, tunnel development, and advanced rail infrastructure installation. Officials believe the experience gained from the Mumbai-Ahmedabad corridor will help India independently manufacture and operate future high-speed rail systems at much higher speeds.
The Ministry of Railways has also indicated that additional high-speed rail corridors are being considered for several major routes connecting Delhi, Varanasi, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, and Pune. These proposed projects are expected to improve regional connectivity, support economic activity, boost tourism, and create employment opportunities in the railway and infrastructure sectors.
Experts believe that successfully developing a 350 KMPH bullet train would place India among a select group of countries operating ultra-high-speed rail systems. The initiative is also expected to encourage growth in railway technology, signalling systems, indigenous manufacturing, and transportation engineering while reinforcing India’s position in the global infrastructure sector.
With large-scale investments in railway modernization already underway, the proposed high-speed bullet train project marks another milestone in India’s efforts to build a faster, safer, and future-ready transportation network for millions of passengers across the country.
