India Climbs to Its Highest-Ever SDG Rank

India has achieved its highest-ever ranking in the UN Sustainable Development Goals Index, rising to 94th place out of 167 countries in 2026. This marks a significant improvement of 18 places since the SDGs were adopted in 2015 — one of the strongest performances among major economies. While challenges remain in areas such as nutrition and environmental sustainability, India’s progress in energy access, social protection, and sanitation reflects meaningful advancement on a massive scale.

India has reached its highest-ever position in the UN Sustainable Development Goals Index, climbing to 94th place among 167 nations in the 2026 report. This represents an improvement of five places from last year and 18 places since the goals were first adopted in 2015 — a notable achievement for a country of 1.4 billion people.

The progress reflects sustained efforts across multiple sectors and stands as one of the stronger performances among major economies over the past decade.

Areas of Significant Progress

India has made substantial strides in expanding access to clean energy and improving social protection systems. Electricity coverage has reached nearly universal levels, and renewable energy capacity has grown rapidly. Mobile broadband and internet connectivity have expanded dramatically, bringing digital access to millions in rural areas.

Social protection coverage has seen remarkable expansion. Data from the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation’s SDG National Indicator Framework Progress Report 2026 shows coverage rising from 22% in 2016 to 65.3% in 2026. Initiatives such as the Swachh Bharat Mission have also delivered large-scale improvements in sanitation.

These gains are tracked and supported through India’s institutional framework, including NITI Aayog’s SDG India Index and Dashboard, which monitors progress across states and union territories.

Ongoing Challenges and Areas of Focus

Despite these achievements, certain areas require continued attention. Nutrition indicators under SDG 2 show mixed results, with child stunting and wasting remaining concerns. Environmental sustainability under SDG 12 and SDG 13 continues to present challenges, as does gender equality under SDG 5.

India’s score on the press freedom component within SDG 16 has also declined since 2015. These areas are acknowledged in the global report and remain priorities for policy action.

Regional and Global Perspective

Even with its best-ever global ranking, India continues to work alongside its South Asian neighbours on shared development goals. Globally, the 2026 report shows that no country is fully on track to achieve all SDGs by 2030. India’s consistent upward movement, supported by robust domestic monitoring systems, positions it as an important contributor to global progress on the 2030 Agenda.

For a nation representing nearly one-sixth of humanity, India’s SDG journey carries significance far beyond its borders. The 2026 results highlight both the scale of progress achieved and the focused efforts still needed in specific areas.
